to Israel are featured.
Leadership for Diverse Schools
This program enables York County
educators to respond more effectively to their diverse student and
parent populations and cultivate an acceptance of differences. This
leadership development course brings together several educators from
each school district to learn more about cultural, racial, economic,
rural/urban, and other differences. They gain knowledge and skills
through problem-solving activities, critical reflection, peer teaching,
and review. Graduates possess the leadership skills and tools needed
to transform their classrooms, schools, and districts into a more
culturally competent community.
Diversity Summit
The JCC and YCCAR have been working
together for some time to address the issues of prejudice, bias,
racism, and discrimination in York County. The organizations have
partnered at several “teaching events,” including a workshop at
Shippensburg University and a diversity art display initiative to
celebrate October as National Diversity Awareness Month. Over this
time, the two organizations have come to realize that the work of
justice, equality, and civil rights for York Countians is a task much
bigger than the JCC and YCCAR alone. The two organizations jointly
hosted a community Diversity Summit in October 2006 to have an open
and exploratory dialogue on how organizations that value diversity may
partner together to continue to build unity in York. Organizations
interested in joining the journey forward and taking an active role to
“safeguard the welfare of our citizens” are invited to contact the
JCC
or YCCAR.
Diversity Art Display
In recognition of National Diversity Awareness
Month during the month of October, community members of all ages are
invited to create a drawing, painting, or other rendering that
expresses how our world of caring, sharing, and respect is a better
place thanks to the differences we each contribute. The art creations
are displayed in the lobbies of the JCC and YCCAR during the month of
October.
Unity March
This one-mile walk through downtown
York unites all ages who help to bring awareness of the importance of
diversity, equality, and non-violence in our community. During the
March, participants are encouraged to interact with each other, bridge
the gaps between their differences, and find a common ground for
conversation and understanding.
